Mentorship & Leadership
Message for Success!
What Makes A Good Mentor?
By Jonnetta Chambers, M.A.

Maturity -- mentally and spiritually
Ethical -- decisions made; actions taken; behavior
Non-threatening -- be approachable and open
Trustworthy -- maintain confidentiality
Optimistic -- be proactive, positive
Resourceful -- lead mentees to be creative and try new or different strategies
Structure -- expect a level of consistency from mentees

Mentality -- perception, values and purpose
Availability -- offer time and attention; require respect of it
Knowledge -- share experiences and perspective; refer to other people and resources
Influence -- allow mentees to learn from you without changing who they (authentically) are
Navigate -- simply provide direction and recommendations; allow the mentee to make decision, mistakes and rebounds
Genuine -- be yourself; allow mentees to see and learn from you (successes and setbacks)

Attitude -- positive, realistic, situation-appropriate (know when to be supportive and firm, with confidence in doing so)

Duty -- practice with care and respect over mentees who have reached out to you, trusting you with their dreams, emotions, energy and time
Inspire -- be a role model, challenge mentees and help them discover and capitalize from what motivates them
Follow-up -- monitor your mentees' progress
Forgive -- the unforgiveness you harbor minimizes what you can give others
Empower -- engage in dialogue and activities which mentees exercise control
Rejuvenate -- a mentor must be his/her best. Take time out and replenish your mind, body and spirit. Pray EVERY day and feel great. You can offer more to mentees.
Endorse -- support and create opportunities for mentees. If you can't endorse them, then something is not quite right with the relationship? Perhaps it should strengthen or dissolve.
Nurture -- mentor others with your mind, and more important, with your heart.
Celebrate -- EVERY accomplishment mentees make is a "BIG" deal. Celebrate everything!
Excellence -- think it, portray it, and expect it!
